As someone who grew up in the 1990's, I watched quite a bit of the popular "TGIF" sitcom Boy Meets World. While I haven't seen all of the 150+ episodes of the show, I think it would be fair to say that I was a pretty big fan. That said, I have no idea how to feel about what I'm about to report. The Disney Channel has just begun development on a BMW sequel series, naturally titled "Girl Meets World".
For those unfamiliar with the show, Boy Meets World centered around young Cory Matthews (Ben Savage, brother of "Wonder Years" star Fred), as he navigated the highs and lows of school, friends, girls, etc. Accompanying him on this journey was his "bad boy" best friend Shawn Hunter (Rider Strong, sadly cursed with an obvious porn name). Cory's love interest Topanga Lawrence (Danielle Fishel) began the series as sort of a flower child hippie, but quickly matured into a beautiful object of lust for many teenage viewers. Making Cory's life difficult were his strict but kind teacher Mr. Feeny (William Daniels), and his older brother Eric (Will Friedle), who seemed to lose brain cells with each new season. Other characters came and went, but those five made up the core of the series.
The show was originally set in junior high, but grew along with the actors, following the characters through high school and then college. Fans will remember that Cory and Topanga did eventually get married, and it's that plot thread that Disney plans to use as a jumping off point for this new project. The titular girl will in fact be the (as yet unnamed) preteen daughter of the aforementioned couple.
In an effort to woo in old BMW fans, Disney is reportedly in talks with both Savage and Fishel to reprise their respective roles. I doubt those talks last long. Both would be absolute fools to say no. Neither actor's career has gone that well since "Boy's" 2000 cancellation, and a well received run on a Disney Channel series might just be the spark needed to reinvigorate their waning careers.
Does the prospect of a Boy Meets World sequel intrigue you? Or should Cory and Topanga remain in the past?
I loved watching Boy Meets World! If this does happen, it would be interesting to see how it's done.
PLEASE LET THIS HAPPEN.
