What a year for 30 Rock star Alec Baldwin. In 2011 he was kicked off an American Airlines flight for refusing to turn off his iPad during a game of “Words with Friends.” Due to the incident, the airline refuses to air 30 Rock on flights any longer. He then announced he wasn’t running for mayor of New York City as speculated (just imagine the scandals!). Apparently he even signed a new contract to reprise his role as Jack Donaghy on 30 Rock as well.
NBC Chairman Robert Greenblatt confirmed the news with Entertainment Weekly. "We have Alec for this season and next season," he said. "We quietly did that in the fall." Despite all major stars signing on for the upcoming season (and possibly more), there’s no word if 30 Rock is locked in for additional seasons after it’s winter return. The fate of the show will depend on the ratings after its Jan. 12 return.
There’s one thing majorly in favor of 30 Rock’s potential renewal for another season- the history of the show. It’s undeniable that the show is not what it was in its first, second or even third season. Once they sent Tracey Jordan off to “Africa,” the storylines slipped. The season finale was one of the least memorable thus far. Though some have possibly forgotten about 30 Rock due to its late return to TV (though let’s be honest, with all the reruns on every channel is that possible?), the show has loyal fans.
This season Liz Lemon has a big secret that’s going to make everyone tune in the first night to discover, but after that where can the characters go? Let’s hope the upcoming season can pick up some slack from last year.
