The cause of death for a former star of MTV's The Real World has been revealed.
Joey Kovar, who appeared on the twentieth season of the show during its Hollywood season, died from opiate intoxication, according to a representative from the Cook County Medical Examiner. Kovar passed away in August.
Law enforcement officials initially thought that he died from a mix of cocaine, Viagra and alcohol. The 29-year-old's death has been ruled an accident.
Kovar apparently had been taking a prescription painkiller called Norco. It is not known of Norco is to blame for his death.
In addition to appearing on the Real World, Kovar was a patient on VH1's Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew. Kovar sought treatment for alcohol, cocaine, methamphetamines, steroids and ecstasy.
He was cast on the Real World because of his outgoing personality and openness about his drug use and parting lifestyle.
"We kind of have an 'I don't give a [bleep]' attitude. What you see is what you get...People want edgy. People want attitude. People want in your face, and that’s what Chicagoans bring. The attitude we have is what's going to draw the ratings," Kovar said in a 2009 interview.
Kovar's body was discovered at a Chicago Ridge apartment with blood coming from his nose and ears. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
He became the third ex-Real World cast member to pass away, after Pedro Zamora and Frankie Abernathy.
