Seth Gabel joins cast of 'Arrow' as Vertigo

Last night's episode of 'Arrow' introduced us to the Royal Flush Gang. Recently we reported that another big-name DC Universe bad guy would be coming to Starling City: a new take on the classic villain Count Vertigo. Now, TVLine is reporting that Vertigo (no longer a Count, poor guy) has been cast and he will be played by Seth Gabel.

As we noted in the last article, Vertigo will not appear as a carbon-copy of his comic book namesake. Whereas in the comics, Vertigo can manipulate the thoughts of others (causing hallucinations and the like), the Vertigo in 'Arrow's Starling City refers to a new drug hitting the club scene in Oliver's town. Whether Gabel's character will be responsible for manufacturing and selling the drug remains to be seen; while it seems Gabel's Vertigo will be devoid of superhuman abilities, the series producers assure he will be "scary and nightmarish." Could Vertigo take on a Scarecrow-esque vibe from 'Batman Begins,' gaining his abilities only in the minds of his drug-addled victims?

One thing is for sure: if the new designer drug is floating around the Starling City club scene, Oliver's sister Thea is bound to get involved. Seth Gabel is an alum from the hit series 'Fringe' and has also appeared in feature films like 'The Da Vinci Code' and 'Jonah Hex.' His appearance as Vertigo will mark the first time the villain has been portrayed in live-action; Count Vertigo has previously appeared in DC Comics animated features.

'Arrow' stars Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen, Colin Donnell as Tommy, Willa Holland as Thea Queen, with Susanna Thompson as Moira Queen and Paul Blackthorne as Detective Quentin Lance.

'Arrow' airs Wednesdays on CW.
