Amazon Studios is stepping up into a higher weight-class, determined to contend with media-streaming giant Netflix.
Earlier this month, Amazon Studios (formerly Amazon Video on Demand) finalized an order for a pilot from writer David Javerbaum entitled 'Browsers.' Javerbaum, long-time writer for 'The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,' sold the single-camera comedy, which will likely become Amazon Studios first ever original series. Javerbaum and 3 Arts Entertainment are producing the project, which revolves around four interns who work at a website styled after The Huffington Post. Filming is slated for January, so expect some news regarding casting and production to slide across the TVRage homepage any day now.
But Amazon wasn't finished.
Today, Deadline.com reports that Amazon Studios has greenlit a pilot order for an original animated series entitled 'Supa Natural.' Produced by Underground Films, 'Supa Natural' centers on two outspoken divas who happened to be humanity’s only line of defense against the supernatural. Will they save the world or will they be too busy shopping? (Yes, it's alright to roll your eyes after reading that).
The script was co-written by actress Kristen Schaal ('Gravity Falls,' '30 Rock,' 'Bob's Burgers') and Jason A. Micallef. The pair will also Exec Produce with Underground Films.
Back in May, Amazon signalled their intentions to develop original comedy and children's programming in order to compete with Netflix. Interestingly, these pilot orders have wavered somewhat from Amazon Studios' initial pledge: both projects come from established television talents (rather than aspiring creators, as Amazon initially intended) and both have been ordered as pilots, signalling a traditional network graduated pace for each series (unlike Netflix' initial foray into original programming, which was a direct-to-series order).
Amazon Studios continues their search for original programming by allowing scripts and mini-bibles for series to be uploaded to their website so that fans may weigh in on the selection process.
