Mr. Matthew Crawley is leaving the abbey.
The ITV's hit series, Downton Abbey, is losing an actor this season as Dan Stevens will not be returning as the aforementioned Crawley. The 30-year-old actor is currently staring on Broadway in "The Heiress" with Jessica Chastain. Apparently he is enjoying his time in Manhattan, saying, "New York for me is going to be one big adventure. “I will be taking the whole family out and we will be there for six months. I don’t know if I will be returning to 'Downton.'"
Apparently he has decided.
"Dan Stevens isn't returning to the series," said a series insider. "He will probably do the first episode of the fourth series, but that will be it."
Downton Abbey also airs in the United States on PBS, with the third series beginning January 16 on Masterpiece. Stevens is a big part of that season.
While he is leaving the abbey, he will be appearing in the two-hour Christmas special as well as the first episode of the fourth series. It is not known if that will be his farewell or not.
It has not been revealed how this will affect Crawley's on-screen lover, Michelle Dockery.
No word on if this is a permanent departure or just a temporary excursion.
