Fresh off her TV movie debut, Disney's 'Sofia the First' series will premiere Friday, January 11 on the Disney Channel at 9:30 a.m. and Disney Junior at 5:30 p.m. The premiere episode will be available on iTunes, WATCH Disney Junior and Disney Channel SVOD beginning a week earlier on January 4.
The series features the voice talents of 'Modern Family' star Ariel Winter as Sofia, a little girl who becomes a princess. Tim Gunn, Wayne Brady and Sara Ramirez will also be cast members. Each also provided voice work for the movie.
Eric Stonestreet, Viola Davis, Bonnie Hunt, Ellie Kemper, Megan Mullally, Jeffrey Tambor and Kiernan Shipka have all signed on to guest star during the first season. In addition, Disney princesses Ariel, Aurora, Belle and Jasmyne will all be making appearances during the season, while Fauna, Flora and Merryweather from 'Sleeping Beauty' will serve as the headmistresses at Sofia's school. I am obviously not part of the show's demographic, but it sounds like a pretty cute concept that will do well for the network. Nobody markets and moves products like Disney does - this gives them a new avenue, as well as a refresher course on its other princesses. Smart move.
The movie's November 18 debut was a home run for Disney, drawing in 5.2 million viewers and becoming the No. 1 cable TV telecast among the children 2-5 demo.
