In the category of 'Things That Make You Go 'EH?!", Chad Michael Murray will join the cast of acclaimed cop drama "Southland" in its forthcoming season.
TVLine reports that former "One Tree Hill" leading man Murray, 31, will appear in several episodes of the new season, playing opposite former "O.C." leading man Benjamin McKenzie. The actor will portray Dave Mendoza, a likeable cop who is alsoa bit of a loose cannon, whose activities off the clock has a negative impact on McKenzie's Officer Sherman. Seems like a pretty generic description of pretty much every fictional cop on a crime procedural.
The casting seems a bit puzzling considering the series' critical acclaim has only grown since its move to TNT after it was canceled after its first season on NBC. Of course, the lead actor on the series also starred in a popular teen soap, so perhaps the show's producers know what they are doing.
Murray headlined The CW's "One Tree Hill" for seven seasons, returning to the soap for one episode of its ninth and final season. Since the series ended, his work has been somewhat sparse, such as the ABC pilot "Scruples." Ironically enough, he was also originally offered McKenzie's role on Fox's "The O.C."
"Southland" will return to TNT for its fifth season on February 13th. Does the addition of the former teen girl crush to the cast make you more inclined to tune in?
