If the title of this new drama gives you a “Dexter” vibe, well, hold on to your hats, because the series is slated to be written by “Dexter” scribe Arika Mittman. “I Hunt Killers” will be based off of a young-adult novel by Barry Lyga of the same name, and follows a very similar premise to “Dexter”. The novel, and series, will focus on the teenage son of the world’s most infamous, imprisoned serial killer. When a string of copy-cat murders begin to happen, this likable boy (named Jasper, or “Jazz”) with the dark past becomes a suspect. Having been witness to many of his father’s unspeakable acts first hand, he finds that he may be more like his father than he ever imagined.
While this may sound like too similar a premise to “Dexter”, reviews of the novel have called it haunting, terrifying, suspenseful and chilling. Maybe we can hope to get a bit of a thrill and chill out of the series as well.
“I Hunt Killers” was published last spring by Little Brown, and its sequel “Game” is coming out in spring 2013. I am not sure why ABC Family picked up this dark series, it does not seem very family friendly to me, besides the appeal it might present to the teen demographic. ABC has had previous success with adapting young-adult novels into series with “Pretty Little Liars”, so maybe they are going for a second hit.
