The final chapter of FOX's sci-fi series Fringe is fast approaching; on Friday, January 18, the sci-fi series will draw to a close. It's hard to be sad about this prospect; very rarely do shows get to anticipate and carefully plot their endgame (especially shows that have struggled to survive as much as Fringe has). In fact, it's tough to be anything but really excited to see how television's best currently-running sci-fi series reaches its curtain call.
While we know very little about the series finale (except for adjectives like "brilliant" and "mind-blowing"), the title was revealed to fans this weekend. It's "Enemies of Fate," according to showrunner J.H. Wyman. (TVLine reports that FOX has confirmed it's "An Enemy of Fate," but I'm gonna side with the guy who wrote the episode on this one).
It sounds almost like a title from the second half of LOST's run, but it's equally applicable to Fringe. After all, our three heroes have been fighting against "fate" for years, from last year's threat of Olivia's certain death to September's own interference to save Peter's life back in 1985. With the heavy involvement of the Observers in the show's fifth season, it seems likely that the trio will be going up against some major odds. When you consider the narrative rule that it must always be darkest before the dawn, fate's going to be looking pretty dire for our heroes before they triumph.
The next episode of Fringe, "The Human Kind," airs Friday, December 7, on FOX. The series finale will air Friday, January 18.
