SyFy is unleashing its newest sci-fi drama, Defiance. The story is set in a time when aliens and humans are trying to co-exist on earth after being taken over by “alien terra-forming machines,” according to a press release.
Grant Bowler will star as Jeb Nolan, a former marine. Nolan searched the earth for meaning in his life after his family is killed in warfare during an alien encounter. After searching the earth, he decides to become a lawman looking to gain order in the chaotic, dangerous world. “Grant’s charismatic charm and his depth as an actor make him the perfect anchor as we build the ensemble for this sweeping adventure series,” SyFy President of Original Content Mark Stern said. “We’re very excited to have him join us on this incredible journey.”
Bowler is best known for his roles on ABC’s Ugly Betty and HBO’s True Blood. The show started production in April and is expected as a summer series. Defiance is produced by Rockne S. O’Brannon. SyFy is even taking the show a step further, introducing a multiplayer online game that follows the same storyline as the show. What a great way to interact with the audiences!
SyFy is hoping to achieve the same success and interest with Defiance as its hit Being Human. The show, based off the UK hit, follows the lives of a ghost, werewolf and vampire who are trying to live a “normal” life among humans. Though Being Human is one of SyFy’s biggest hits, Defiance follows a storyline closer to Jericho (which airs in reruns on the station).
