The team behind 'Ugly Betty' six years ago, Salma Hayek and Silvio Horta, have formed a dream-team with Mark Gordon (producer on 'Criminal Minds' and 'Grey's Anatomy') to develop a series for ABC.
Originating with an idea from Hayek and written by Horta, 'Bastards' centers on a colorful Cuban-American family who have their lives turned upside down when it’s revealed that the family patriarch had a child with the family maid over 25 years ago. Now his wife will do anything to protect her children’s inheritance and prevent her family’s deep dark secrets from ever seeing the light of day.
Hayek has reportedly been seeking a way to tackle the subject material of 'Bastards' for some time. Horta, who is of Cuban-American descent, was excited for the opportunity to focus on the material as well: "I immediately sparked to the concept — it was fun and juicy and had the opportunity for both a lot of salacious situations and humor as well as a lot of heart and emotions, hitting that sweet spot I like to write." When asked about the previous success of 'Ugly Betty' and the teaming on 'Bastards,' Horta added "I hope that history will repeat itself."
'Bastards' was an eleventh-hour buy at ABC, bringing a rare opportunity for Latin-American stars to shine on the network. Who would you like to see cast in 'Bastards?'
Horta is slated to complete the pilot script within a month; casting on 'Bastards' will move forward after that. Keep checking TVRage for the latest.
