It looks like ABC jumped the gun a bit last week when they announced that they had given the green light to the new paranormal drama series “Weird Desk” to premiere this summer. “Weird Desk” was going to be slated to join “Mistresses” on the ABC lineup, one of many new scripted originals being picked up by networks to try and bring in viewers over the slower summertime months. The decision to put the brakes on the new series seems to be a result of slow production times and badly planned scheduling. There will not be enough time to fast-track the series’ production so that it would be ready in time for the summer season without it being done at a higher price - which is a big deal for an original series attempting to make a splash in the summer heat.
“Weird Desk” has been described as an “X-Files” type series. The paranormal drama was picked up for 13 episodes, each to be an hour long, The series was set to follow investigative partners Morgan and Rosetta, who work for a top-level organization (“Weird Desk”) that is in charge of investigating the paranormal, supernatural and extra-terrestrial cases that are passed to it.
There are some other rumours floating around about why ABC decided not to move forward with “Weird Desk” for the upcoming pilot season. There may be some objections to the series because of its similarity to the highly anticipated Joss Whedon project also at ABC, “S.H.I.E.L.D.”. While both series will be based on secret organizations, I think that there is enough of a difference in the plots that this rumour may likely be false.
Whatever the deal may be, I do not think it is likely that we will see a speedy resurrection of “Weird Desk” from the cutting room floor into production. Once projects like these go down, it takes a lot to bring them back to life.
Were you looking forward to “Weird Desk” this summer? Do you think ABC will bring it back after the upcoming pilot season is over?
