HBO revealed one of its more inspired product crossovers earlier this week: the network will be teaming with Brewery Ommegang to create a series of Game of Thrones-themed beers, with the release of the first slated to coincide with the March 31, 2013 season 3 premiere.
We've now gotten a first look at the bottle design of that first beer, the Iron Throne Blonde Ale, and really, it looks about like you'd expect. It's a grey label, with a simple picture of the iron throne. It looks to be about 6.5% ABV as well, meaning you should be able to discuss the season premiere with a clear head, even if you down a whole bottle of Iron Throne Blonde Ale during the episode. It's a big bottle, too -- 25 ounces is the only size in which the beer will be offered. This might be meant to encourage sharing amongst friends watching Game of Thrones -- or it might just be meant to encourage Baratheon levels of intoxication, should you decide to have several.
Entertainment Weekly, who first released the photo of the bottle, noted that the cork means "you can uncork it with your teeth and take a swig while leaving your sword
hand free." Please don't do this; there's going to be some pressure in that bottle that will probably give the cork some unpleasant propulsion.
As for the flavor of the beer, Ommegang brewmaster Phil Leinhart provided a rather delicious-sounding description: “With a Lannister currently on the throne, it made sense to do a delicate, but piercing Golden Blonde Ale with Noble hops. Iron Throne is certainly fair in color and soft in appearance, yet it still possesses a complexity and bite to be on guard for.”
You bet we'll be on guard for it. Iron Throne Blonde Ale will be on sale starting March 31 for $8.50 a bottle. Are you as excited as we are?
