Showtime pilot to be directed by Ridley Scott

Huge news for Showtime: Hollywood superstar director Ridley Scott, the man behind 'Prometheus,' 'Gladiator,' and 'Alien,' is going to direct a television pilot for the first time in his career.

Ridley Scott

Scott has agreed to helm the pilot episode of an upcoming drama project called 'The Vatican.' I'm going to make the bold prediction that this is going to be controversial...

The show is described as "a provocative contemporary genre thriller about spirituality, power and politics – set against the modern-day political machinations within the Catholic church. The series will explore the relationships and rivalries as well as the mysteries and miracles behind one of the world’s most hidden institutions."

The script was written by Paul Attanasio of 'House,' rounding out the dream-team with Scott and Showtime logoShowtime.

While 'The Vatican' has only been ordered as a pilot at this stage, however with Scott and Attanasio on board some positive media buzz will likely encourage Showtime to place a larger order. While this marks Scott's first time directing for television, he has previously produced TV series such as 'The Good Wife' and 'World Without End.'

Who would you cast in 'The Vatican,' knowing that the media is going to go crazy for the pilot? Which big star could help this potential series?
