TNT cancels 'Leverage' after five seasons

Leverage cast

The season finale of Leverage might be airing on Christmas Day, but TNT just gave fans a big lump of coal in their yuletide stockings.

A few short weeks ago, our own Adam Langton published this piece about the speculation then running rampant about the future of TNT drama Leverage. At the time, executive producer Dean Devlin seemed hopeful, but unsure about whether the show would receive a sixth season. Unfortunately for fans, TNT chose to wait until "doomsday" to drop the cancellation axe.

There is one small consolation Leverage viewers can take, despite the bad news. Devlin has previously made it clear that the 77th (and now final) episode will in fact be the series finale as the creative team has always envisioned it. Thankfully Devlin had the foresight to realize the show might not come back, and felt that it wouldn't be right to risk the show ending on a unresolved story thread, as so often happens in TV. Still, I'm sure fans would vastly prefer more all new adventures with Nate Ford and his team instead.

Devlin posted the following on the show's official fan site:

"The Long Goodbye is our final goodbye.

It has been decided today that this Tuesday’s episode of Leverage “The Long Goodbye Job” will be the series finale as TNT has decided not to renew the show for a sixth season.

I want to take the opportunity to thank TNT for five amazing seasons and 77 episodes of a show that has been so good to me.  I’m incredibly proud of the show and what we’ve accomplished.  Throughout this journey TNT have been the most amazing partners.  Their support and collaboration I will cherish forever.

I also want to thank everyone involved in making the show.  Tim, Gina, Beth, Christian and Aldis are the finest ensemble of actors I’ve ever worked with.  They’ve become our partners, our friends and our family.

The amazing crew who pulled off miracles every day on our show.  Thank you for everything you’ve contributed.  Your blood and sweat is in every frame of our series and I’m eternally in your debt.

And, of course, on behalf of everyone involved in the show, thank you to all the fans who’ve supported us and the show.  You have amazed us all.  We love you and thank you all.

I’m so happy we were able to film the series finale we had always envisioned and I’m happy we’re able to present it on Christmas as our gift to you.  It’s a bittersweet goodbye."

Will you miss Leverage? Did TNT make a bad call?

I'm so heartbroken over the cancellation of Leverage. It was one of the BEST shows on tv. There's so much junk and reality junk that a person can't get real tv entertainment anymore. I work and enjoyed relaxing in gthe eve with Leverage and a FEW other good show. This was a great cast and story line which will be missed terribly by me and many others. BAD CHOICE TNT!!!!!!!

Cancelled ......Makes sense,

The shows were always interesting and good. The actors were great and we reaally got a feel for every one, The action was extremly well made and the plans (heists) were Always intriguing and amazing.

People just loved it.

See the show was always about the little guys like us, who get screwed day in and day out by highly paid executives very similar to those at TNT and ABC ,Fox ect... ,and the little guy like us finally getting even or lets say justice.

It's a wonder it didn't get cancelled in the first season

One of the shows this season probably just hit a little too close to home and some exec. somewhere got his ego insulted so he flexed and cancelled the show.

Normal behavior for the robot penguins.
