In a last minute change of heart, Jason Segel who was dead set on not returning to the show for a nine season had a change of heart and agreed to one more season on “How I Met Your Mother”.
“HIMYM” series creators Craig Thomas and Carter Bays had made the decision that the fate of the show had to be decided by the end of this month to allow them time to complete the story arch and close up loose ends before the series finale. The license deal for “HIMYM”, the creators and the cast were all up at the end of the current season and according to Bays everyone was “right in the middle of white-knuckled, nail-biting” negotiations.
Fans of the show might be excited or disappointed that the show is going into a ninth season. Many fans don’t want to see their favourite sitcom off the air, while others are frustrated that they have not yet revealed who ‘the mother’ is and don’t want to be dragged through another season of guessing. Josh Radnor, Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris and Alyson Hannigan had all agreed to return while Jason Segel held out to the very last moment, leaving everyone hanging. According to Deadline, Segel “Decided to bail and leave the cast hanging. But he just got turned around today at the last second. The show was literally dead.”
All signs point to the ninth season being the final season for the show and it is probably safe to say that everyone can look forward to finally learning who ‘the mother’ is at the end of it all.
Segel should have bailed. Nine years is too long for any show, especially one with a concept like this one.
