It's beginning to look a lot like the day the Doctor Who Christmas special airs, and anticipation is building. The episode, titled "The Snowmen," will see the Doctor in a very different place than he was when we last saw him, in the series 7 midseries finale "The Angels Take Manhattan." After all, that episode saw the sudden departure of his companions Amy (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill), who were whisked away to the past where the Doctor could never see them again. As a result, he's gotten a bit surlier in the time that has elapsed since.
The episode plays with the same elements of Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" that the 2010 Doctor Who Christmas special, "A Christmas Carol" did, except that this time it's the Doctor who's the Scrooge. It's only by his meeting Clara (Jenna-Louise Coleman), who we know will be his new companion in the second half of series 7 (and beyond) that the Doctor is able to transcend his foul mood.

"The Snowmen" will air Christmas day on BBC One in the UK and BBC America in the US.
