Unlike Doctor Who's past few holiday outings, today's Christmas special, "The Snowmen," contains some radical changes to the series as a whole. Of course, there's the much-anticipated introduction of new companion Clara Oswald (Jenna-Louise Coleman), who will provide much of the mystery for the second half of the series. Then there's the brand new interior for the TARDIS, which is a complete aesthetic change. And now, we've finally gotten a look at the new title sequence for the series, which will perhaps be seen as the most lasting part of the Christmas special's legacy.
Since the show was revived in 2005 (and really, years before that), the title sequence has followed the TARDIS through the wormhole-like time vortex. Despite some minor changes to that formula (color, mostly), the titles remained essentially the same from 2005 until earlier this year. But the Christmas special eschews the wormhole almost completely (until the very end) and instead careens through space, passing through nebulae that happen to resemble star Matt Smith and featuring rather odd electronic flashes. It looks like the changing texture of the Doctor Who logo will remain the same, though; the version you see below emulates the titular snow of the Christmas special.
The theme music, while retaining the major compositional changes of series 5 (the bombastic opening), has gotten a little more synthesized, and features some really cool dissonance.
The only part of the titles I don't like is the very ending, in which the TARDIS zooms toward the camera and we enter through its doors -- the CG is just awful. I prefer the fade out that the titles have typically ended with, as it's much less jarring. But, overall, I'd say this new title sequence is rather great. What do you think?
