Maybe this Twitter thing is going to work out afterall.
Measurement tools that gauge how people interact on social media during television broadcasts have gone through the roof - in fact, Nielsen has announced that it will be creating a "Nielsen Twitter TV Rating" and Trendrr also announced that the social interactions revolving around TV programs surged this year.
Trendrr released its second-annual Year End Stats Report and said that more than 800 million social interactions around TV programs occured this year on their day of air. When you factor in interactions on the day's programs are not on the air, the numbers are expected to rocket through the roof and into the billions.
August was the most interactive month - thank you Summer Olympics on NBC. However, every month of 2012 at least doubled its 2011 counterpart. In fact, Twitter interactions were up 800% from 2011. Eight hundred percent! Experts expect this trend to continue.
The top entertainment program in terms of interactivity might surprise you. 'SpongeBob SquarePants' had more than 25 million social interactions, taking the crown for the second straight year. Other shows with huge interactions include 'X Factor,' 'The Voice,' 'WWE Raw,' and 'Pretty Little Liars.'
Event like the Grammys, Oscars, Super Bowl, etc., also did very well.
