David Letterman takes verbal swing at Jay Leno

What are the chances that David Letterman and Jay Leno ever become friends? It seems impossible, especially given what Letterman says to Oprah Winfrey during his appearance in her new show 'Oprah: The Next Chapter' on January 6th (the episode taped already, obviously).

Letterman discussed his rivalry with Leno, calling Leno "the most insecure person I have never known." And while Letterman does give Leno some praise, he seems to enjoy digging into him a lot more.

"We were always friends before all of this happened," said Letterman, while denying that their rivalry has anything to do with Leno getting the 'Tonight Show' gig over Letterman. "He has a way...he's an unusual fellow. I've never met anyone quite like Jay. And I will say—and I'm happy to say—that I think he is the funniest guy I've ever known. Just flat out, if you go to see him do his nightclub act, just the funniest, the smartest, a wonderful observationist and very appealing as a comic.

"Therefore, the fact that he is also maybe the most insecure person I have ever known...I could never reconcile that," he continued.

That seems consistent with other things I have read about Leno and what the general perception of him is. Do you think that sounds accurate? Which late night funnyman do you prefer?
