New Year's Eve Guide 2013: What to watch

Happy New Year

As we get ready to celebrate the end of another year, there are plenty of television specials and marathons to keep you entertained right up until the ball drops. Whether you're going out or staying in, there's something for everyone this holiday. Let's take a look at what's on tap.

Sunday, December 30

- Tonight at 8:20 PM, the season finale of NBC's Sunday Night Football will pit the Washington Redskins against the Dallas Cowboys, who need a victory to advance to the postseason. If the gridiron isn't your thing, at 7:30 PM PBS is offering a 90-minute Call the Midwife Holiday Special, in which Nurse Jenny Lee tries to find the children of an elderly vagrant while Chummy plans an ambitious nativity play. For pigskin of another kind, Destination America presents a new series entitled United States of Bacon at 10 PM, hosted by chef Todd Fisher as he travels the country in search of the most delicious (and presumably, cholesterol-filled) bacon creations he can find. Over on Science, also at 10 PM, a momentous episode of How It's Made will feature the inner workings of its 1000th product.

Monday, December 31

- While countdown specials are a popular destination on New Year's Eve, there are also some television marathons to keep you busy. From 8:00 PM until 6:00 AM, The Hub will broadcast 10 back-to-back episodes of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, starring Kevin Sorbo as the titular hero. For something more recent, you can celebrate the lack of apocalypse with a marathon of the first eight episodes of The Walking Dead's third season, beginning at 9:00 PM on AMC.

Ryan Seacrest- Prior to ABC's broadcast of Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve With Ryan Seacrest, the Alphabet network will preface the festivities with a two-hour special at 8:00 PM called New Year's Rockin' Eve Celebrates Dick Clark, a retrospective on the life and career of the legendary TV producer and personality, who passed away in April. At 10 PM, Ryan Seacrest and Jenny McCarthy ring in the New Year from New York for the first time without Dick Clark, while Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas holds down the fort in Los Angeles.

- Other New Year's countdowns include New Year's Eve With Carson Daly on NBC at 10 PM, live from New York City's Times Square; New Year's Eve With Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin on CNN, also beginning at 10 PM; New Year's Eve Live! on FOX from Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, at 11 PM; the Fox News Channel's All-American New Year airs at 11 PM, populated by your favorite FNC personalities; and MTV's Club NYE 2013, hosted by Jersey Shore's Jenni "JWOWW" Farley and Jeff Dye of Money from Strangers, will kick things off at 11 PM. At 11:30 PM on Adult Swim, Eric Andre's Live New Year's Eve Spooktacular will feature the comedian along with D-level celebrity guests like Demi Lovato of The X Factor, Omarosa of The Apprentice fame, and Kevin Sorbo of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. This could be the first time that Sorbo has competed against himself.

How will you be welcoming in 2013?

With so much to choose from to ring in the New Year, it’s hard to pick just one, but I think I’ll be watching Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest. Either way, I won’t be able to watch it live, since I’ll be working late tonight at DISH, but I’ll be able to ring in the New Year after I get off. Thankfully, DISH’s Hopper will record the entire event, since it has 2,000 hours of storage available, and I can celebrate like the rest of the world!
