Kevin Bacon is one of the world’s most recognizable actors. With a diverse and impressive track record that includes movies from “Footloose” to “Apollo 13” and “Mystic River” and even a Google App which calculates the “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon” (based on a short-lived fad from the late 1990s which sprang from the notion that anyone in Hollywood was no more than six steps removed from sharing a credit with actor Kevin Bacon) it may come as a bit of a shock that the actor is making the switch from the big screen to the small one. Bacon is set to make his television series debut in the upcoming thriller drama “The Following”, and had a few things to say about why he made the decision to head to television after his successful film career.
Kevin Bacon has made guest appearances on television in the past, but he has never been a regular character on a television series. So what is it that made “The Following” so special that it lured the award winning actor? Bacon says it has everything to do with the subject matter of the series.
"When I first read the script, I thought to myself, 'If we do it right, it's going to be kind of like a water-cooler sort of show where people will be saying, 'I can't believe what happened last night on 'The Following''. So far--we're into Episode 7--I feel like we've been pretty successful with that." Bacon says.
Bacon feels that the series is so special because not only will it capture the attention of viewers, but it has completely captivated the actor himself. "I think the scripts are really exciting and really scary and when I get them...I can't wait to see where the plot is going to go," he said. "...I'm thrilled. I think it's going to be one of the fun things about watching this show--to see what happens week after week."
Bacon, now 54 years old, is playing former FBI agent Ryan Hardy on “The Following”, a man coming out of retirement to help track down a serial killer played by James Purefoy. Bacon’s wife, Kyra Sedgwick, recently ended her long time run on the series “The Closer”, and Bacon says that although her departure and his transition into television was not planned, that it is coming at a good time. "It kind of felt like the passing of the baton, but it really wasn't that," he said. "I actually started to explore the idea of doing TV probably three or four years ago, but there just wasn't anything that...I felt was a really good match with me, and it just happened that timing-wise this one came along and hers ended and we just switched roles.”
