After what has been (so far) a very unfriendly back and forth battle between the two “American Idol” judges/divas, Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey were forced to kiss and make up during a press tour panel in Pasadena yesterday…sort of. The panel was on damage control yesterday, trying to squash the perception that Season 12 is going to be an all-out cage match between Carey and Minaj. Let’s be serious here, we all know it is going to happen either way.
While producers admitted that the feud between the ladies is very real, they tried to shed some insight into the situation by saying that none of it was personal, and that it really all boils down to passion. Fox reality chief Mike Darnell said “It’s authentic. There’s a passion in this group. They disagree on a lot of the talent…it’s not just the girls, it’s everybody.”
“This is a very passionate panel,” Carey echoed. “It’s great it’s such a diverse group of people.” Sure, passion, we’ll go with that.
Producer Nigel Lythgoe then chimed in, saying “The feud, whatever feud there has been, it’s not just between Nicki and Mariah. Keith Urban and Randy Jackson have moments as well.”
While this may paint the picture that the judges really are just one big happy, passionate, family – the awkward nail in the coffin came when a critic asked Carey and Minaj to say something nice about each other. Minaj jumped at the chance and immediately said “That actually is easy, I say nice things about Mariah all the time. She’s one of my favorite artists of all time; she’s really shaped a generation of singers. To be on a panel with her is kind of crazy… all these singers that come in aspire to be Mariah Carey.” Actually, that sounds pretty nice.
However, when the spotlight turned to Carey, things got noticeably uncomfortable and she seemed to be struggling to come up with an answer. “That was obviously a very sweet thing to say,” she began, noting that they once did a video together (“Up Out My Face”). “It was one of my favorite videos and songs,” and that she has always felt that Minaj “was going to go very far”. Carey rounded it off by saying “I’m grateful for anything nice she or anyone else would say about me.” Err…I don’t think that really counts as a compliment, but good try.
Whatever they may have said on the panel, I think it is clear that there is some tension between the judges this season. Are you interested in tuning in to watch the women duke it out on Season 12?
