The already-stellar cast of HBO's upcoming eight-episode drama series 'True Detective' (which just added Michelle Monaghan yesterday) just became even more star-studded. Starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, 'True Detective' just landed Alexandra Daddario ('Texas Chainsaw,' 'Parenthood'), Elizabeth Reaser ('The Good Wife,' 'The Twilight Saga' franchise), Wood Harris ('Dredd,' 'The Wire') and Michael Potts ('Law & Order,' 'The Wire,' 'Damages').
'True Detective' has been described as an elevated serial narrative with multiple perspectives and time frames. It centers on two detectives, Rust Cohle (McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Harrelson), whose lives collide and entwine during a 17-year hunt for a serial killer in Louisiana. A murder case from 1995 has been reopened in 2012 and the two storylines share screen time as 'True Detective' unfolds. Michelle Monaghan ('Due Date,' 'Source Code') was just cast as Martin Hart's wife, Maggie.
Alexandra Daddario, who's feature 'Texas Chainsaw' is presently in cinemas everywhere, has been brought in to portray Lisa Tragnetti, a sexy court reporter whose relationship with Hart takes a dark turn for them both. It will be interesting to see how the 1995/2012 storylines are portrayed on the screen; while the fifty-two year old Harrelson could certainly play his character back in 1995 as well, a twenty-seven year old actress like Daddario wouldn't be able to make the leap. For instance, if Tragnetti (Daddario's character) meets Hart in 1995, Daddario wouldn't be able to play Tragnetti in 2012 as well. It will be interesting to see how HBO handles the dual narrative.
Elizabeth Reaser will play Laurie Perkins, Cohle’s (McConaughey) pretty, refined girlfriend. Perkins, who has been dating Cohle for four years, is a surgeon who works at the hospital with Maggie (Monaghan). The beautiful Reaser is no stranger to television, recently filming seven episodes on 'The Good Wife' and twelve episodes of 'The Ex List' back in 2011. Fans will recall her roles on 'Grey's Anatomy' as well. However her role of Esme Cullen, the vampire mother to the vampire heart-throb Edward Cullen, in 'The Twilight Saga' (spanning five feature films) is likely what she will be known for by the younger generation.
Wood Harris and Michael Potts will play Det. Thomas Papania and Det. Maynard Gilbough, respectively. The duo are partners: Gilbough (Potts) is a cerebral detective whereas Papania is more about action (Harris). The pair question Hart and Cohle about the 1995 case and feel the duo is hiding something. Harris has been an underrated talent since his time on 'The Wire;' his calm and powerful portrayal of Avon Barksdale during the series' first season was the highlight of the show. It's great to see these two talented hands getting brought on board with the likes of Harrelson and McConaughey.
'True Detective' is certainly heating up--will you tune in?
