The non-stop action of pilot season continues here at TVRage! The latest news is a greenlit comedy pilot over at ABC that has none other than Hollywood legend James Caan attached to star!
The as-yet-untitled comedy pilot has two different monikers that have been bandied about during a network bidding war over the project: one proposed title is 'Safe at Home' with the other being 'She's Got Balls.' Before passing judgement on those titles, consider the premise:
The half-hour multi-camera format comedy series is about a single mother who leaves her husband and moves back in with her beer-swilling former ball player father (Caan). The mother (as yet uncast) reluctantly agrees to coach her son's underdog little league baseball team, becoming enraptured once more in a world of competitive sports that she vowed to leave behind.
The pilot is being written and produced by Robb and Mark Cullen ('Work It,' 'Heist') and is slated to fit the inter-generational comedy vein of the smash hit 'Modern Family.'
While the female lead has yet to be cast, the star power of James Caan has immediately moved this pilot order to the top of the Fall anticipation list, making it an attractive role for any thirty-something actress. Caan is best known for his feature roles in the likes of 'The Godfather' and 'Elf,' as well as 'Misery,' where he had one of the best fight scenes in cinema history against Kathy Bates. (Seriously, James Caan with two broken legs versus Kathy Bates. Check it out). Caan has turned to comedy in his recent years with roles in 'Mickey Blue Eyes' and 'Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.'
This project marks only the second television series starring role for Caan, following up on 'Las Vegas,' which was critically acclaimed. Needless to say: Caan is what we would call "a good get."
Who would you like to see cast as Caan's character's daughter in 'Safe at Home/She's Got Balls?'
