For a few weeks now, the Manti Te’o saga has fascinated America. The star Notre Dame linebacker, who finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting this season, has become a laughingstock after it was revealed that his "girlfriend" that tragically died during the season had not actually died - to die, something has to first be alive, which Lennay Kekua is not and has never been.
Slowly the details emerged as to what really happened with the situation, with it being revealed that Ronaiah Tuiasopo was behind the fraud. Dr. Phil McGraw landed the first interview with Tuiasopo, which airs this week in two parts, where Ronaiah talks about the situation.
The "catfish"-er revealed to Dr. Phil that the whole scenario began two years ago and that it rose in stature as Te'o's college football fame grew. Tuiasopo revealed to McGraw that he fell in love with Te'o and was "confused" about his sexuality, and that Te'o had nothing to do with the hoax.
"I had to start just living and let this go," Tuiasopo said.
Tuiasopo revealed also that he was the voice behind Kekua, despite a report from the New York Post that alleged that the voice actually was that of Tino Tuiasosopo, a cousin of Roniah's. Voicemail messages from Lennay have been released following Te'o interview with Katie Couric and if that was Ronaiah, I am very impressed by his vocal skills.
I hope that this whole mess is almost over. Te'o will never live this down, but it is nice to know he was not scamming everyone.
