A popular streaming video service announced a freebie Friday.
Netflix will allow non- subscribers to see the first episode of “House of Cards” through the month of February.
“House of Cards” is the service’s first original series. Netflix members, meanwhile, can watch all 13 episodes beginning today, a trend that will be continued when the new “Arrested Development” episodes debut on the service in May
The political drama stars Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright, Kate Mara, Kristen Connolly and Corey Stoll and is produced and developed by Beau Willimon. “House of Cards” is an adaptation of a BBC miniseries by the same moniker.
In the modern political thriller Spacey plays Rep. Frank Underwood, a hard- nosed politician with designs on the nation’s top job.
Independent studio Media Rights Capital purchased the rights to “House of Cards” with intentions to turn it into a series. David Fincher (“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”) directed the first two episodes.
It will be interesting to see how the move affects subscriptions for the service, which gives a free month to new customers and lets them drop out easily.
