"Goin' To The Mall." "Sandcastles In The Sand." The February 4th episode of CBS' hit "How I Met Your Mother" will see the return of the beloved Robin Sparkles. In a recent conference call,, producer Craig Thomas and star Robin Sparkles herself, Cobie Smulders, hyped the Canadian pop icon's return.
The two revealed that Monday's episode will feature a Canada-heavy storyline for Robin while she and Barney continue to plan for their upcoming wedding. The pop star alter ego of Robin Scherbatsky will take a darker, edgier turn this time around which Smulders and Thomas admit was heavily influenced by Alanis Morissette.
Despite the upcoming episode being hyped as the final appearance of Sparkles, with the recent announcement of a ninth season of the series there could be room for another. "We always want to do a different take on it," Thomas said. "In the back of my head somewhere, I'm thinking, 'How do you not get Robin up at her own wedding to perform a medley of Robin Sparkles songs?' But who the hell knows? I don't want to rule it out." The actress also professed to be on board with recording another song for her character, saying "It's my favorite thing to do on the show. I love it."
The episode, entitled "P.S. I Love You", will also be loaded with Canadian celebrity cameos including returning stars James Van Der Beek and Alan Thicke, in addition to Alex Trebek, Paul Schaffer and more. Thomas said "[We've taken] 'How I Met Your Mother's Canada fetish to whole new heights... We actually reached out to more people than we thought we would get, and they all said yes. So that's why there are so many Canadians in this episode... and they were all wonderful."
Smulders says that the remainder of the season will see her and Barney's characters planning for their coming nuptials. "I think there's a lot to come from planning a wedding," she said, "and I think there can be a lot of funny moments in that."
Added Thomas, "I think ultimately Barney and Robin aren't the most touchy-feely couple that talks about every issue and would cover all of the ground before getting married, and they are on a pretty accelerated timeline towards getting married, so I think what's interesting is seeing, as the spring goes by, Robin and Barney realize all the topics that they do need to cover."
