Well, I think we have learned just about everything we are going to learn about the Manti Te'o catfishing story.
Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, the person who pulled the wool over Te'o's eyes, sat down with Dr. Phil this week and discussed the incident, revealing a lot of information about himself in the process and apologizing once to Te'o.
"I can't express how sorry I am towards Manti and his family, and everyone affected by this. I can't express how sorry I am to my family and just those who have been there for me no matter what," he said. “I hurt every day for the decisions I've made.”
He told the good doctor that when he was a child, he was molested.
"There were just some things that happened back then, that I felt then, that were just too horrific and too horrifying for me to share growing up with," said Ronaiah. "And holding that in as a child, it just led me to wanting to escape my real life."
Dr. Phil also talked to Tuiasosopo's parents, who were devastated when he told them about the molestation, as well as what he did to Te'o.
"He sat us down, before he even got to the Manti part of the story, listening to the abuse that he received, it helped put things into perspective," said his father, Titus Tuiasosopo. "It took a while to sink in; I didn't really have a response immediately. My first response was 'I love you son.' After hearing all of that, nothing changes my love for him."
Are you over this story yet? I feel bad for everyone involved - especially Te'o. Hurting someone else because you were hurt is never the answer. I do not pretend to understand why Ronaiah did what he did, but I respect the fact he is owning up to it.
