The old saying is that you can't go home again, and that appears to be true for one-time successful talk show host Ricki Lake. Anybody who remembers the 90's will recall that her original self-titled chat show ran for a whopping ten seasons, beginning in 1993 and ending in 2004. When it was announced that Lake would return to the talk show scene in 2012, many wondered whether she could recapture the old "magic". The answer to that questions appears to be a resounding no, as production company Twentieth Television has announced that Ricki's new show will not be returning for a second year.
The reason for the decision is fairly obvious, as the show just never gained real traction in today's much more crowded daytime talk show market. Not to mention that Lake's return wasn't promoted very well, leaving me to wonder just how many of her old viewers even realized she had come back to TV. Ricki's fate is similar to the one that befell fellow talker Rosie O'Donnell, who tried to resurrect her old talk show on Oprah Winfrey's fledgling network, only to get quickly canned due to low ratings.
Ricki Lake viewers won't have to go cold turkey though, as new episodes will continue to be produced and air until September. Here's hoping Arsenio Hall's new late night venture meets with more success than Lake or O'Donnell's returns to the talk game. The world needs the "dog pound".
Did you watch Ricki Lake's latest show? Did it deserve to get the axe?
