More often than not, TV series are including the computer nerd; the educational wiz; or the intelligent bookworm. These characters have almost become a staple on the small screen, and let’s admit it that we love them! These roles are not only classified as brainy, but sometimes even hot. So, in honor of these conventional and, some not so conventional, dweebs, here are 8 of TV’s hottest male and female geeks.
1. Sherlock Holmes
“Elementary” has become a smash new hit on CBS, and a lot of credit goes to Jonny Lee Miller who plays the deducing Sherlock Holmes. In addition to his eccentric qualities, Holmes is a recovering drug addict and former Scotland Yard consultant, who now works alongside the NYPD. He is a modern day detective who doesn’t need guns or a badge to catch bad guys, but uses his mind, and sometimes risky skills, to put murderers behind bars. If you’re an avid watcher of the series, you know Holmes loves to read; watches about five TV’s at once to practice his memorization abilities; and is potentially working on a paper about bees. His witty remarks and intellect is elementary, my dear.
2. Felicity Smoak
Emily Bett Rickards is an up-and-comer in the TV world. She plays Felicity Smoak in CW’s latest DC Comic sensation, “Arrow.” Felicity works as an IT tech at Queen Consolidation, which is owned by Oliver Queen/The Hood’s (Stephen Amell) family. She is not your average computer geek, and has proven herself to be a huge asset to the Queen family, especially Oliver. On multiple occasions, she has assisted Oliver in cracking computer codes and retrieving information. Even though she hasn’t caught onto the fact that Oliver is actually Starling City’s mysterious vigilante, she is slowly coming to realize something big is going on inside the Queen family. She is a loveable geek, and it doesn’t hurt she has a great, awkward personality.
3. Jimmy Palmer
“NCIS” wouldn’t be the same without Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen), or as Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) calls him, the autopsy gremlin. Palmer is the assistant medical examiner to lead ME Ducky (David McCallum). He first appeared near the end of Season 1, and fans fell in love with the man who loves to joke, sing and tell stories. In addition to his geeky tendencies, Palmer has the most adorable dimples; a great smile; and did I mention his amazing abs? I recommend Googling that ASAP. He also married the beautiful Breena (Michelle Pierce), and even once had a clandestine relationship with a bad agent. It sounds like he’s doing something right as a geek.
4. Leonard Hofstadter
Leonard Hofstadter is the nerd of all nerds. Played by Johnny Galecki, Leonard is pertinent to the most-watched comedy on TV, “The Big Bang Theory.” His smart, yet geeky, qualities shine through Leonard’s love of comic books, action figures and video games. He works as an experimental physicist at Caltech, alongside his three best friends, who also happen to be major nerds. Despite his characteristics, which might turn off a lot of women, Leonard has managed to snag blonde-bombshell Penny (Kaley Cuoco) as his girlfriend. It must have been love at first sight when Penny saw Leonard dress up as Frodo in Season 1’s Halloween episode.
5. Rory Gilmore
Alexis Bledel has become one of the most beloved actresses, especially since playing bookworm Rory Gilmore on “Gilmore Girls” beside her mother Lorelai (Lauren Graham). Rory is smart, and by smart, I mean extremely smart. She was valedictorian at her private high school; got into Harvard, Princeton and Yale; and ended up graduating from Yale. Whew! That’s a lot of accomplishments. Did I say she was smart? Her lifelong dream was to attend Harvard, but to no avail. Her intelligence didn’t keep the men away either. Dean, Jess and Logan all fell madly in love with the girl. At the show’s end, she chose her career over love. That’s dedication.
6. Ross Geller
NBC’s “Friends” gave us a decade of laughs, not to mention some uncomfortable moments from Ross Geller (David Schwimmer). Ross was considered the dweeb out of his friends. He loved science, reading, documentaries, dressing up as Sputnik for Halloween (above) and dinosaurs; after all he did earn a degree in Paleontology, which resulted in mostly harsh judgments. Always wanting to look cool, Ross tried several trends, that just turned out badly. From a spray tan that went wrong to bleaching his teeth extremely white to shrinking leather pants by sweating too much, Ross was one of those geeks where a lot of things went wrong. One thing he didn’t screw up, was finally getting together with Rachel (Jennifer Aniston). Ross and Rachel forever!
7. Bernadette Rostenkowski-Wolowitz
Another “Big Bang Theory” character, Bernadette Rostenkowski-Wolowitz (Melissa Rauch) is one hot blonde . . . for a dork. She is a former waitress at The Cheesecake Factory, and now works full-time as a microbiologist. Bernadette worked hard and put herself through grad school to earn her Ph.D. In addition to her career, she married fellow geek Howard Wolowitz (Simon Helberg) last season, and they have a love like no other. As a geek, Bernadette seems cool in comparison to her hubby.
8. Spencer Hastings
ABC Family’s “Pretty Little Liars” might not seem like the type of show to have dorks, but it does! Spencer Hastings (Troian Bellisario) doesn’t look like a geek, but she is all kinds of smart, and sometimes considered a dork to her friends. Spencer has a long list of wealthy Hastings’ to impress, and doesn’t disappoint when it comes to school. She is a classic overachiever who works, interns, volunteers and is part of several school clubs. Unfortunately, Spencer recently lost out to Mona (Janel Parrish) as Decathalon captain, so now she’s taking her knowledge to a whole new level to punish “A” and his/her team.
It’s always hard to narrow down lists to just a few of our favorite TV characters, actors and actresses. Let us know about your favorite geeks, and which ones you consider hot!
