Downton Abbey is one of the most popular television series in the world (says the New York Times). While viewship does not equal quality (as MTV's Jersey Shore taught us), most people seem to think Downton Abbey is a quality program. The series has won Golden Globe and Emmy awards and was called the most critically acclaimed English-language series of 2011 by the Guinness Book of World Records.
So, is it good?
If you asked Maggie Smith, who stars on the series as The Dowager Countess, she would be a little hard pressed to give you an answer. You see, Smith (who also appeared in all the Harry Potter films) has not seen any of it. In an interview that has not aired yet with CBS' 60 Minutes program, she confessed. The interviewer asked her is she was proud of her work on the series and she paused for a moment before answering.
"Well, yes, of course I am," she said. "I was just pausing because I haven't actually seen it. I don't sit down and watch it ... I've never watched it."
I know a lot of actors and actresses do not watch themselves on screen. It still seems odd to me, though. I think if I was on a show, I would definitely check it out and try to fix things I was doing wrong.
