The American adaptation of the British Broadcasting Corporation's Gavin & Stacey program has added a stand-up comedian to its roster.
Dustin Ybarra will be joining the series, which is being developed at Fox under the name of Family and Friends. The comedy series is a half-hour single camera offering that focuses on two very different people who become lovers and try to make the long-distance relationship work out, despite the best wishes of everyone around them.
Ybarra will be playing Smithy, the best friend of Gavin (played by Jason Ritter), as well as his roommate. The two men live together in New York City.
Smithy is an odd-looking guy who is very rough around the edges, but has a sensitive side and believes in romance.
Ybarra has also worked on "21 and Over," "We Bought a Zoo," "Hop" and has appeared on Showtime's Californication.
The series is being written (and executive produced) by David Rosen (I Just Want My Pants Back). Steve Coogan, Jane Tranter, Julie Gardner, James Corden, Ruth Jone and Henry Normal will also executive produce, and Michael Patrick Jann will direct the pilot.
The series is being developed by Sony Pictures Television, BBC Worldwide Productions and Baby Cow Productions.
