The best writers always advise to write what you know. Derek and Julianne Hough are following that advice, setting up a new scripted drama at Starz set in their all too familiar world of competitive ballroom dancing.
Entitled "Blackpool," the drama will revolve around the annual ballroom competition in the titular city in England, but will reportedly delve into the seedier behind the scenes side of the glitz and glamour.
"When you’re in the world, you’re so invested. It’s literally the be-all and end-all. But when you step back from it, you see that obsession with perfection and the fact that the lifestyle that you thought was so glamorous is actually a little shocking," Julianne Hough told The Hollywood Reporter.
Her brother Derek, one of the professionals on ABC's hit "Dancing With The Stars," will join his sister as a creative partner, lending his years of experience to shed light on some of the more bleak areas of the sport. "What makes it so interesting is seeing all of the politics and the scandal," says Derek Hough. "It’s framed in the world of ballroom dancing, but the stories that are intertwined are of the partnerships and the sex and the love triangles.”
The brother and sister team will serve as both executive producers on the project as well as head choreographers, though it is not planned to have either appear on screen. While Julianne recently revealed a history of abuse during her time as a competitive dancer, she insists that the series will not be autobiographical, but instead touch on both her and Derek's experiences. "We definitely want it to be fictionalized," says Julianne. "We’re going to start with our experiences in the world and stories that we’ve either seen or gone through, but it'll be fun to be able to elaborate and fictionalize these characters."
