From NBC's The Office to TBS's Wedding Band, Melora Hardin has developed a knack for portraying strong-willed women in positions of authority. Continuing that trend, she has been tapped to play the manager of a big box home supply store in the TBS multi-camera comedy pilot Do It Yourself.
Hardin, who memorably portrayed Dunder Mifflin's dysfunctional Vice President of Northeast Sales Jan Levenson on The Office, will step into the role of yet another boss, the paranoid and irrational store manager Kate. Like any typical store manager, Kate has an inflated sense of self-worth and could be described as drunk on power.
Most recently, Hardin co-starred on the canceled TBS comedy Wedding Band as Roxie Rutherford, the founder and CEO of the most successful event planning company in Seattle.
Created and written by Van Wilder director Walt Becker and Cheers writer Rob Long, Do It Yourself focuses on Nick, a twentysomething math teacher. When he is laid off, Nick throws himself into the blue-collar world of home-supply retail by getting a job at a big box store, modeled after Home Depot, and quickly becomes a leader among his band of misfit co-workers. Along the way, he discovers new ways of defining what it means to be a teacher.
Although this is their first project together, Becker and Long have previous experience at TBS. The director of feature comedies Wild Hogs and Old Dogs, Becker co-created the hour-long comedy series Glory Daze that lasted for one season in 2010, while Long co-created the half-hour sitcom Sullivan & Son, which received an order for a second season back in September.
James Widdoes, a prolific TV director on multi-camera sitcoms such as Two and a Half Men, The King of Queens, and 8 Simple Rules For Dating My Teenage Daughter, has signed on to helm the pilot. He has also worked with TBS before, directing episodes of Sullivan & Son and Men At Work.
It's great to see the funny and talented Melora Hardin plying her trade on a new show, but the track record of the creative team behind Do It Yourself doesn't exactly inspire me with confidence that this will be a quality project. What do you think?
