The great comedian Will Ferrell was announced today as the inaugural recipient of the MTV Movie Awards' Comedic Genius Award.
Ferrell has become a comedy force since he starred on Saturday Night Live, arguably becoming the most famous and successful cast member ever (arguments could be made for Eddie Murphy or Robert Downey Jr. Maybe even Mike Myers.). A great first choice, in my opinion.
“Will Ferrell epitomizes what it means to be a comedic genius, and it’s only fitting that he should be the inaugural recipient of this award,” said MTV president Stephen Friedman. “Over the course of his extraordinary, 17-plus-year career, he has entertained audiences across the globe with an impressive array of laugh-out-loud performances on air, online and in films. Simply put, Will Ferrell is kind of a big deal.”
The awards ceremony will be broadcast live on April 14 and is being hosted by Rebel Wilson. The rest of the nominations are scheduled to be revealed next week, during the 2013 MTV Movie Awards Nominations Spectacular, which airs live on MTV and MTV.com. The special will be hosted by Josh Horowitz, who will be assisted by Jenni “JWOWW” Farley, Nev Schulman and the cast of Teen Wolf.
Fan voting begins as soon as that special ends.
