The Walking Dead: Is a familiar face returning next week?

The Walking Dead's third season has undoubtedly been the show's best so far. That's admittedly not much when you consider the show's second season, but episode for episode, the series has somehow managed to remain exciting. And, as last week's "I Ain't A Judas" showed, the series is finally getting good at developing its characters. For example, Merle Dixon (Michael Rooker), once a two-dimensionally despicable character, has suddenly shown depth and become oddly sympathetic. It's nice for the show to finally make us care about the characters (before they're inevitably, brutally killed by the zombies, that is).

Bringing back Merle (a character who made two appearances in the first season and one in the second) was a great move for the series. And now, it appears, the show might be making a similar move. Mild spoilers and major theories ahead:

Check out this promo from next week's episode, "Clear," which sees Rick, Carl, and Michonne driving to a town (not Woodbury, don't worry) on a supply run. Once they reach the town, though, they're confronted by a helmeted man with a scoped rifle. See for yourself below:

Now that I've got you thinking in a "familiar faces" mindset, who do you think that mysteriously helmeted man is? If you guessed Morgan, well, ding ding ding, you and I are at least on the same wavelength.

Don't remember Morgan? Think back to the show's first episode, "Days Gone Bye," -- Morgan was the guy who helped Rick survive his first few days out of the hospital. The character, played by the fantastic Lennie James, hasn't been seen since that first episode, though his return has been rumored.

Probably less likely is the character of Morgan's son Duane. When Rick and Morgan reunite in the comic series, Duane is dead, and the shock of his death has driven Morgan just a little bit crazy. So in that trailer, when Rick asks Michonne if she thinks someone's crazy, he might not be talking about the Governor.

In any case, it'll be great to see Morgan back again if this theory turns out to be true (and I'm optimistic that it will). Insanity or not, the character will be a fantastic asset in Rick's battle against the Governor, especially considering how bad of a shot everyone was in the gunfight from this season's "Home."

What do you think of my theory? Would you like to see Morgan back on the series?

The Walking Dead will air "Clear" next Sunday at 9/8c on AMC.

a quick glance at the imdb cast listing for TWD shows: Lennie James ... Morgan Jones (3 episodes, 2010-2013) pretty sure that's another good sign he's coming back, and I just wish that he'd be sticking around, 'cuz I liked the character in the show and comic and Lennie James is amazing.

Huge Lennie as well, can't wait to see Morgan - and I hope he stays around atleast 'Axel' time length.... and not 'Thomas/Dave' time length ... or we could get lucky and he could be on the 'Beth' time length (suprised shes still alive)
