RZA is trading in his iron fists for a police shield.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Wu-Tang Clan member is the latest rapper to take on a television role in a police procedural, agreeing to co-star in the upcoming Fox drama pilot "Gang Related."
The series centers on Ryan Lopez, played by Ramon Rodriguez ("Charlie's Angels"), a gang member who turns the tables on the police as he goes deep cover in the San Francisco Police Department to aid his crime family. As he rises through the ranks to the SFPD's Gang Task Force, Lopez is torn between his loyalties to his old family and the responsibility to his new one.
The Grammy-nominated rapper/producer will join the project as Cassius, Lopez' partner and best friend on the task force. Unlike his partner, Cassius' loyalties are never in doubt, as he was driven to become a cop when his lover is gunned down in a gang shooting.
Chris Morgan ("Fast Five") wrote the pilot and will produce with Scott Rosenbaum, Brian Grazer, and Francie Calfo. Morgan brings with him "Fast & Furious" cast members Sung Kang and Inbar Lavi to round out the ensemble series.
The new role comes on the heels of RZA's film writing and directing debut in the kung fu opus "The Man With The Iron Fists." While the action took center stage in that effort, the rapper showed some decent acting chops that should lend well to the series. And really, he can't be any worse than Ice T.
