The wonderfully talented Idina Menzel is making her return to Glee, and maybe just in time to give her long-lost daughter Rachel some much needed support and advice. Menzel has guest-starred on the series in the past as Rachel’s birth mother and the adoptive mother of Puck and Quinn’s baby Beth.
On Tuesday, Glee actress Lea Michele (Rachel Berry) used her Twitter account to reveal the news, tweeting “I spy Idina Menzel at Glee today! So excited to have my mama back.” While the nature of her return has not yet been revealed, I can think of a few reasons why Shelby might be popping back in for an episode or two. A visit to New York City to visit the distraught and (possibly) pregnant Rachel would be an obvious reason for a return. Shelby could also be stopping by Lima to restart her old fling with Puck (Mark Salling), who recently returned to Ohio and had very obvious chemistry with Shelby when she coached the Troubletones in season three.
A Tony award winning performer, Menzel made her singing debut (and earned her first Tony nomination) in 1996 for her portrayal of Maureen Johnson in Rent. Menzel has recently announced that she will be making her return to Broadway in the new musical If I Then.
