The new pope has finally been selected!
Sure, you could be thinking of that thing that happened in Vatican City this week with the new pope, Pope Francis. However, this is a television site and I am bringing you television news.
This new pope will be part of Showtime's new The Vatican pilot. Actor Bruno Ganz has been cast as Pop Sixtus VI. Ganz is best known for his work in the film Downfall, where he played Adolf Hitler (and no, I will not be making a Pope Benedict XVI here).
The new series will deal with power, politics and spirituality and is set in modern day. It will take us behind the scenes of the institution, showing us how relationships and rivalries are handled and how the Catholic Church maintains its enduring positive image.
Pope Sixtus VI is a German and seen as an introspective caretaker who spends time trying to improve his legacy and how he is judged by history.
Friday Night Lights alum Kyle Chandler has also been cast in the series, as New York Cardinal Thomas Duffy. Other cast members include Ganz joins a cast that also includes Anna Friel, Sebastian Koch, Matthew Goode and Ewen Bremner.
Sound like a series you would visit?
