The third season of HBO's Game of Thrones is probably the show's most anticipated year yet. Season 3 will be an adaptation of the third book in A Song of Ice and Fire, A Storm of Swords. The book, a favorite of many fans, features plenty of exciting scenes that will be exciting for fans of both the books and the show alike.
Bryan Cogman, one of the show's writers, took some time to chat with Rolling Stone about adapting George R.R. Martin's book (Cogman is writing the fifth episode of season 3, "Kissed By Fire").
Cogman is aware of the third book's popularity amongst fans: "[A Storm of Swords] is definitely the book we've all been working towards, so Season Three, and the upcoming Season Four, are going to be very special. More than once I found myself on set watching a scene play out and realize I'd been envisioning this scene in my head for years. I got lucky in that I was assigned an episode with several such fan-favorite scenes."
"One thing I love about this season, and the third book, is it pays off and builds on plotlines and character arcs that go all the way back to the very first episodes of the series. Another reason I think the third book connects with readers, and with us, is that it contains lot of game-changing moments – no reference to the show's title intended. George really tears into the characters' inner lives in an arguably deeper way than the previous volumes did," Cogman added.
You can read the rest of Cogman's rather lengthy interview over at Rolling Stone.
Game of Thrones season 3 will kick off Sunday, March 31 with the premiere episode "Valar Dohaeris" at 9/8c on HBO.
