'Arrow' promotes Manu Bennett to series regular

The cast of The CW's "Arrow" continues to expand for its sophomore season.

Manu Bennett

The hooded vigilante series added yet another regular cast member to its ranks, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed yesterday. Manu Bennett, who has held a recurring role as Slade Wilson (aka the man who would be Deathstroke) on the series, has been bumped up to a series regular starting in the fall.

The superhero series has been one of the Fall season's few great success stories, and Bennett has been a welcome addition to the cast this season as the tough and unforgiving mercenary who forges an uneasy alliance with Oliver Queen during his stay on the island Purgatory. During his few appearances so far, Wilson has made a physical impact on his island captors while also giving Queen a few tough lessons that surely shaped him into the tireless vigilante viewers know and love.

Wilson joins fellow recurring characters who will play bigger roles next season such as Emily Bett Rickard, who plays tech wizard Felicity Smoak, and Colton Haynes as the delinquent Roy (aka the future (?) Arrow sidekick Speedy).

Producers remain mum about whether Wilson will evolve into the villainous Deathstroke, but one thing is certain: good or bad, expect Slade Wilson to play a pivotal role next season.

The storyline that goes back to the island is increasingly becoming more interesting than what's going on in the series present. It will be interesting to see what they do with the Slade Wilson character. Slade (in the written genre) has been an assassin and has also acted as a hero at times. He could go either way but, if the writers want to keep some continuity between this show and the comic books, Slade will become one of Green Arrow's most dangerous and consistent enemies. Hopefully, if they do name Roy Harper (I'm still waiting to see when Green Arrow is called something other than the "Vigilante" or the "Hood".) it will be Arsenal. The character on the show is clearly in his late teens or early 20's so "Speedy" might be a bit juvenile.
