Consider this another grim warning sign that NBC's 'Community' won't get a fifth season. According to Amazon, the fourth season is being rather rushed out on DVD -- it'll hit shelves on May 28, less than three weeks after the season 4 finale.
Here's why this is a bad sign: most networks hold off on DVD releases until closer to the next season. That's why, for instance, we waited eight months for the Game of Thrones season 2 box set -- releasing them closer to the next season's premiere gives fans a chance to rewatch right before the next season and keeps the show fresh in their minds. It's a great promotional tool, but apparently it's one that Community doesn't need.
Also, let's hope that the box art for Community: The Complete Fourth Season changes from what it is now, which is just a barely reworked poster. It lacks the character and humor of the previous seasons' designs -- though maybe that's meant to be indicative of something (if that's the case, the DVD set's designers have reached Abed levels of meta).
Community's fourth season will continue tonight on NBC with the episode "Economics of Marine Biology" -- in which, "In the hopes of recruiting a particularly weathy student, Dean Pelton recruits Jeff, Britta, and Annie to help Greendale's recruiting efforts, [while] meanwhile, Troy and Shirley start a new Physical Education class, with unexpected results, [and] Abed opens a new fraternity at Greendale" -- at 8/7c on NBC.
