Angela Bassett & Julian McMahon Covertly Join FOX CIA Drama

FOX had previously announced plans to get in on the TV spy game with a new pilot written by former Prison Break and Bones producer Karyn Usher and directed by Brett Ratner, but now reports that the network has entered final negotiations with two of the principal stars of the series. The as yet untitled project centers around the previously cast role of Jane Forsythe (Saxon Sharbino), "the orphaned 14-year-old daughter of a CIA operative who encounters a mysterious rogue agent who serves as her surrogate father and professional mentor in the spy world."

Angela BassettFirst off on the new casting front, Oscar and Emmy nominated and Golden Globe winning actress Angela Bassett has signed on to portray "the calculating and political director of the CIA who takes Jane under her wing." This will be Bassett's first regular TV gig since a stint on the final season of ER a few years back.

Julian McMahonNext up, the role of the aforementioned mysterious agent and father figure to Jane will be played by ex-Nip/Tuck star and Dr. Doom himself, Julian McMahon. This is the first starring TV role for the former Dr. Christian Troy since the long running FX drama ended in 2010. We'll see how he adapts to an environment with much less freedom of content than his last series, which often pushed the envelope in regards to sex and violence on basic cable.

Does this plotline interest you? Does the casting of Bassett and McMahon help or hinder your desire to check it out? Or have you still not forgiven Brett Ratner for X-Men 3 and won't watch it regardless of who's in it ? Discuss.

My mother loves Julian McMahon.  She'll watch.  Brett Ratner couldn't direct a fire to burn.

Haha. The moment when I read "Angela Bassett" I was like "Whoa whoa whoa, wait, isn't that Director Chase from Alias?" and DAMN I was right. Really, really great actress. I am SO looking forward to seeing her again in the CIA. And I'm DEFINITELY looking forward to this show! The premise sounds like they got a lot of inspiration from Alias, too. "Young girl meets CIA agent, developes deep emotional relationship with him as he's mentoring her the ways of the spies"? Damn, I'm in.
