The Wire alum Reg E. Cathey has been chosen to appear in a mysterious season-ending arc on the Portland-based fairy-tale series Grimm. The role sounds vastly different from Cathey’s “journalist-turned-political-aide” character Norman Wilson on the wire – this time he will be playing a curious and strange man named Baron Samedi.
The NBC series has cast Cathey to appear in the final two episodes of season 2, and his character Baron Samedi sounds very ominous indeed. Baron Samedi is one of the Loa of Haitian Voodoo. Samedi is a Loa of the dead and the head of the Guédé family of Loa. No other information has been released yet about the specific circumstances surrounding the appearance of Cathey’s character.
Since The Wire ended in 2008 Cathey has appeared on numerous television shows, and even tried his hand at the theatre. Cathey’s television credits include two guest appearances on Law & Order:SVU, a guest appearance on Law & Order: Criminal Intent, a boxing promoter on the short lived FX series Lights Out, and a recurring role as Freddy on the Netflix original series House of Cards. Since September of 2009, Cathey has played the role of Ellis Boyd "Red" Redding in a theatrical production of The Shawshank Redemption at Wyndham's Theatre, London.
