8 Useless TV Characters That Should Be Given the Boot

While watching your favorite show do you ever think to yourself, “why is that character even on here?!” Some television roles have no point, no storyline, are annoying and just stand in the background contributing absolutely nothing to the series. No offense to the actors, they’re great, but their characters are just blah. These are the type of characters that if they were kicked to the curb the plot would not be affected. Here are just a few of the useless characters currently on television.

1. Ashley Davenport from “Revenge”
Ashley on Revenge

Portrayed by Ashley Madekwe, Ashley Davenport on ABC’s hit series “Revenge” has really done nothing on the show. Oh wait, that’s a lie. She did Daniel Grayson (Joshua Bowman) during their short-lived relationship, and even squeezed in time to do his father Conrad (Henry Czerny) too. In between her infidelities, she’s busy showcasing her signature move. What’s that you ask? It’s standing on the sidelines, holding folders and planning extravagant parties for Victoria (Madeleine Stowe). She’s basically a puppy dog obeying the Grayson’s orders. Maybe she should start her own party planning business? Ashley contributes nothing to the revengeful plotline.

2. Nicky Reagan-Boyle from “Blue Bloods”
Nicky on Blue Bloods

Nicky (Sami Gayle) on “Blue Bloods” is horrid. Every episode featuring the young Reagan showcases her overly opinionated statements. The worst part about the character is she is always going up against her mother, Erin (Bridget Moynahan), and never gives her a break. Rarely does Nicky agree with her mom. It’s a constant battle. Yes, she’s a teenager, but come on! She repeatedly hurts Erin’s feelings and is always going around her mom and asking for her grandpa’s (Tom Selleck) help. If she were to exit the show, it wouldn’t be the worst thing. The only good thing about her? She has a cute haircut.

3. Beverly from “The Mindy Project”
Beverly on The Mindy Project

In the second episode of “The Mindy Project” Beth Grant played nurse Beverly. The entire episode revolved around the firing of Beverly, because she was terrible! For most of the episode, Mindy (Mindy Kaling) and Danny (Chris Messina) interviewed potential candidates. Thankfully, it was goodbye Beverly, hello Morgan (Ike Barinholtz). Well, now Beverly is back as an executive secretary. Why?! She is so not needed and she barely has any lines. The rest of the “Mindy” team can hold their own without her. Here’s hoping Beverly will get herself fired again sometime soon.

4. Declan Porter from “Revenge”
Declan on Revenge

Here’s yet another “Revenge” character that’s gotsta go. The intolerable Declan Porter (Connor Paolo) is infuriating. Besides helping his brother, Jack (Nick Wechsler), run The Stowaway, babysitting his nephew, Carl, and playing boyfriend to Charlotte Grayson (Christa B. Allen), Declan brings zero edge to any storyline. If anything, all he does is cause more problems, especially for Jack. If he weren’t around, he probably wouldn’t be missed. He and his poofy hair need to poof on out of The Hamptons.

5. Catherine Rollins from “Hawaii Five-0”
Catherine on Hawaii Five-0

When Michelle Borth first appeared as Catherine Rollins on “Hawaii Five-0,” she only showed up every once and awhile to have a romantic fling with Steve McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin). When Season 3 rolled around, Catherine became a series regular and a member of the Five-0 team. It’s unnecessary for someone else to be added to the task force, which already consists of so many great people who can kickass on their own. To be honest, Catherine has helped McGarrett, Danny (Scott Caan) and the others on occasion, but the team would not fall apart without her. Oh, and I’m pretty sure Steve would not have any problems finding another woman.

6. Rafa from “Royal Pains”
Rafa from Royal Pains

Talk about a "royal pain." Rafa (Khotan) from USA’s “Royal Pains” is the definition of exactly that. He sauntered onto the show as this sultry Argentinian polo player, and is now just a jerk. At first, he was OK. After I got to know him. he really bothered me. His relationship with Divya is like a rollercoaster. They fall in love. He lies and sleeps with other women. The two break up. The two work it out. They get hitched in Vegas. They get the marriage annulled. Can you say “trainwreck”?! Divya can do so much better! She worked so hard to get out of an arranged marriage and to fight for her love life. Rafa is an anchor dragging Divya down with him. She needs to kick him to the curb, and focus on someone who is worth it. It's time for Rafa’s to ride away on his not so white horse.

7. Hayley from “The Vampire Diaries”
Hayley from The Vampire Diaries

As soon as werewolf Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) graced my TV while watching “The Vampire Diaries,” I knew we weren’t going to get along. Yes, part of that reason is because she betrayed Tyler (Michael Trevino), helped Professor Shane (David Alpay) and slept with Klaus (Joseph Morgan), though I can’t blame her there, but she still drives me crazy. I find her pouty and whiny. Hayley’s story about finding her birth parents just seems irrelevant, unless she’s related to someone in Mystic Falls. Unfortunately, she’s not going anywhere. If TVD spinoff “The Originals” gets picked up it looks like Hayley will be starring alongside our favorite original vamps.

8. Nellie Bertram from “The Office”
Nellie from The Office

“The Office” should have ended when Steve Carell exited. Instead of going out on a bang, the show is going out on a lull. Don’t get me wrong, I adore the NBC comedy, but it’s gone downhill, and with help from Nellie Bertram (Catherine Tate). I never understood why the show had to bring on Nellie and Robert California (James Spader) for Season 8. But, let’s focus on Nellie. Robert is another story. I must admit Nellie grew on me, but she is crass, irritating and gets under my skin. Her storyline is meaningless. The Dunder Mifflin gang can suffice without the British redhead. Even though I’ll miss “The Office” once it’s over for good, I won’t miss Nellie.

Who would you add to the list?

Oh my god! Thank you! I thought I was the only one who thinks Michelle Borth's character on Hawaii Five 0 is pointless. They can't even work her into the everyday storyline for her character to grow and become monumental to the show. I'm sorry, but I don't miss her when she's not there.

Actors cost money, writing the scripts cost money and the studios don't wast money. If you take away a character from a show, you change the show and the story. For example how would the 5-O teem get secret access to information & satellites if they got rid of Michelle ??? Every one is in there show because they are needed to advance the story, but that doesn't mean you have to like them. So enjoy the nasty, stupid, idiotic, foolish and plain boring characters, because they make the shows more interesting. Even if you think the shows would be better without them, they wouldn't be.

Michelle Borth ROCKS, you dunmbassess. The useless character that should be FIRST on any lists, as is, in fact the only TRULY useless one, is of course, SUGAR MOTTA on that trainwreck we call GLEE. What's up with that? Who is vanessa Lengies friends with? Who is she blowing? why? Why? WHY? You disapoint me, TV nerds!

Wish Hawaii Five-0 had kept Lauren German and let Michelle Borth fade off into the sunset. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. I actually like Borth as an actress but just didn't feel the way her character worked in the show worked as a love interest. The story-line they followed with Lauren German made sense and since she was on the team it made even more sense. To cut if off the way the budding romance was progressing the way they did and then have Borth suddenly become the full-time committed love interest like what was going on with Lauren German never even occurred just made no sense to me.

Translation of the last comment: "I don't agree with the author's opinion, therefore it is invalid". Yawn. I don't agree with all these picks either, but that doesn't mean the list "blows". Grow up.
