Netflix acquires 'Sense8' for a ten-episode order

WachowskisHow's this for a blessed geek union: Andy and Lana Wachowski (who brought you 'The Matrix' franchise and 'Speed Racer') teaming with J. Michael Straczynski (creator of 'Babylon 5' and writer of 'Thor'). Netflix has acquired the rights to the project coming out of this nerdy dream-team and has ordered ten episodes of an original sci-fi series called 'Sense8.'

This project further expands on the success Netflix has had with original programming like 'House of Cards' and also marks the first television series created by the Wachowski siblings. So just what is 'Sense8?' Well aside from the assertion that it is a genre project, the details are shrouded in some mystery. "Several years ago," Andy Wachowski explained to Deadline, "we had a late-night conversation about the ways technology simultaneously unites and divides us, and out of that paradox 'Sense8' was born."

Wachowski continued, "We’re excited to work with Netflix and Georgeville Television on this project, and we’ve wanted to work with Joe Straczynski for years, chiefly due to the fact his name is harder to pronounce than ours, but also because we share a love of genre and all things nerdy." Netflix

Netflix has described 'Sense8' as "a gripping global tale of minds linked and souls hunted." Still not a lot of detail to go on, there. Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos hyped the project as well, saying "Andy and Lana Wachowski and Joe Straczynski are among the most imaginative writers and gifted visual storytellers of our time." You can expect the patented Wachowski visual style to port over to the small screen, as everyone involved seems excited to bring the big-screen feel to a Netflix original series.

The current plan for 'Sense8' is for the genre project to debut on Netflix in 2014. TVRage will post more details on this exciting project as they become available.

Oh for the love of god ... please finally let Jericho rest in peace, yes ? It was a fantastic show until it was ended and CBS then ruined it with that 7 episode pos wannabe 2nd season. There is just no way to undo those 7 episodes and bring the series back in it's former glory. What Netflix should do (not from a business point of view tho, although .... vod works very diffrent from broadcast television) is create a REAL new space show ala Star Trek, B5, Farscape ... something along those lines. Or maybe pickup the Stargate Franchise and continue that with the best of the cast of both series (no, I don't count Universe as a SG series).
