A TV gossip host has been added to the list of inductors of the 2013 WWE Hall of Fame class.
Maria Menounos (inducting Bob Backlund) joins Arnold Schwarzenegger (inducting Bruno Sammartino) for this year's event, held April 5 at Madison Square Garden and broadcast Tuesday, April 9, at 10 p.m. ET on USA Network.
The event precedes Wrestlemania 29, airing live on pay- per- view April 7 from MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
The Menounos- Backlund coupling isn't as strange as it sounds. Menounos had a match at last year's WWE Wrestlemania event, and apparently is friends with former WWF champion Backlund.
"It is an honor to induct my good friend Bob Backlund into the WWE Hall of Fame," Menounos said in a press release. "Watching him carry the title for a since unmatched five years and then stage such an incredible comeback with a reinvented persona puts him in a class all his own. Add in his incredible work ethic and high moral caliber, and you have everything that defines the word champion. And astonishingly, he can still wrestle with guys a third his age! He's my hero and my friend. I can't wait for the ceremony on April 6."
The press release states that Menounos met Backlund through her boyfriend Keven Undergaro when he cast Backlund on MTV's "Singled Out," and Backlund and Menounos also appeared in feature "In the Land of MErry Misfits" together. Backlund was present at Menounos Miss Massachusetts USA competition and ran alongside her at the Nike Celebrity Road Race, according to the release.
Schwarzenegger and Sammartino (who, until recently, rejected overtures to induct him into the HOF) have apparently been friends for over 40 years. Both were very muscular men in their primes.
