There have been a lot of rumors floating around the internet recently that television icon Barbara Walters was getting ready to call it a career. Walters has had some health issues this year already and some reports have leaked out saying that an announcement was coming soon from her that the end was drawing near.
Today on The View, she addressed these rumors, saying that, "There were many reports last week saying that I was retiring from ABC, and there was an assumption that I would be making an announcement today. ... Here I am, and I have no announcement to make. But I do want to say this: that if and when I might have an announcement to make, I will do it in this program, I promise, and the paparazzi guys, you will be the last to know."
Even if today was not the day for the announcement, it seems like it is coming. Walters is 83 years old now and, even with today's nonannouncement, industry insiders believe that the announcement is days or weeks away, rather than months or years. She is expected to retire in May 2014.
She will, however, remain with the program through its next season, which will be its 17th. The show is preparing for a big change, as in addition to Walters' possible departure, co-hosts Joy Behar will be leaving and reports say Elizabeth Hasselbeck will be as well.
